Lord & Lady Loughborough and Sir John Milbanke

Margaret Sheila Mackellar Chisholm, daughter of Harry Chisholm of Sydney, NSW, Australia married in 1915 Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough, eldest son of the fifth Earl of Rosslyn. The marriage suffered from Loughboroughs drinking and gambling and the couple divorced in 1926. In 1920, Albert, Duke of York, the future King George VI was linked romantically with Sheila who, at that point, was still a married woman. She married secondly in 1928, Sir John Millbanke, eleventh baronet (d. 1947) and thirdly, Prince Dimitri Romanoff of Russia in 1954. She died in 1969. Pictured with their son, and the man who would become Sheilas second husband three years later! Date: 1923

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a moment in time during the tumultuous life of Lady Sheila Chisholm, later known as Lady Loughborough and Lady Milbanke. The image, dated 1923, shows Lady Sheila, then still married to Francis Edward Scudamore St Clair-Erskine, Lord Loughborough, with their young son. At this point in their marriage, Lord Loughborough's drinking and gambling habits were causing significant strife, leading to their eventual divorce in 1926. The year 1920 brought whispers of a romantic link between Lady Sheila and Albert, Duke of York, who would later become King George VI. However, she remained married until 1928 when she wed Sir John Milbanke, the eleventh baronet, three years before this photograph was taken. Despite the complexities of her personal life, Lady Sheila's story is a fascinating chapter in the annals of high society. Her marriages, scandals, and romantic entanglements were the talk of the town, making her a subject of intrigue and fascination. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the intricacies of love, marriage, and the human condition.
