EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative 18th century print depicts St Martin's Priory in Dover, Kent, a once-majestic monastery founded in 1131 by King Henry I. The Priory of St Martin of Tours, as it was known, was a significant religious and cultural institution during the Middle Ages, attracting pilgrims from across Europe seeking the healing powers of its holy relics. By the 18th century, however, the once-thriving monastery had been transformed into a working farm. The dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII in 1535 had led to the seizure of the Priory's lands and assets, and the once-devoted monks were forced to leave. The buildings, including the priory church and the monks' accommodation, were repurposed for agricultural use. Despite its new role, the Priory continued to hold a certain allure for visitors. The ruins of the once-great institution served as a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of the region. The print captures the haunting beauty of the Priory in its decay, with ivy creeping up the crumbling walls and the peaceful countryside stretching out in the background. The Priory of St Martin of Tours was just one of many religious institutions dissolved during Henry VIII's reign. The Dissolution of the Monasteries marked a turning point in English history, leading to the secularization of religious lands and the consolidation of royal power. Today, the ruins of St Martin's Priory stand as a testament to the complex and often tumultuous history of England and its religious institutions.
