EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures four intrepid soldiers of the 2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, serving in the 19th Brigade of the 6th and 27th Divisions, during their time in the Bois Grenier Sector of the Western Front in 1915. The soldiers, wearing the distinctive tartan berets of their Scottish regiment, are seen donning some of the first gas masks to be issued to soldiers in the trenches. The respirators, which include goggles to protect the eyes, were a crucial addition to the soldiers' equipment as the use of poison gas became an increasingly common tactic in the brutal trench warfare of the First World War. The soldiers' expressions convey a mixture of determination and apprehension as they prepare to face the unknown dangers lurking in the trenches. The date of this photograph is May 1915, marking a significant moment in the history of military warfare as soldiers adapted to the new and deadly threat of chemical weapons. The 2nd Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders played a vital role in the defense of the Western Front, and this image serves as a poignant reminder of their bravery and resilience in the face of adversity.
