EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the biblical story of Samson and the destruction of the Philistine temple at Doreah. Taken from the Old Testament of the Bible, specifically the Book of Judges, this event marks a pivotal moment in both Samson's life and the history of the ancient Israelites. Samson, a strong and heroic figure, is shown here in the midst of his final act of defiance against the Philistines who had oppressed the Israelites for many years. With supernatural strength derived from his Nazarite vows, Samson had been able to deliver the Israelites from their enemies on numerous occasions. However, his love for the Philistine woman Delilah led him to betray his vows, and as a result, his strength was taken away. Desperate to regain his power and free his people once more, Samson entered the temple at Doreah, where a great feast was being held in honor of the Philistine god Dagon. With the temple filled with Philistine nobles and leaders, Samson requested that the great pillars supporting the temple be brought close together. As the crowd cheered and jeered, Samson prayed to God for strength one last time. With a mighty roar, he pushed against the pillars, bringing the entire temple crashing down upon the unsuspecting Philistines. This powerful image, created by the renowned artist Gustave Doré, captures the intensity and drama of this historic event. The intricate details of the temple, the expressions of the figures, and the sense of destruction and chaos all serve to transport the viewer back in time, allowing them to witness this momentous biblical story unfold before their eyes.
