EDITORS COMMENTS
Rama's Triumphant Crossing: The Monkey Bridge to Lanka This image depicts the Hindu divine hero Rama, standing victoriously on the shore of Lanka, the island fortress of the demon king Ravana. Rama, an incarnation of the god Vishnu, embarked on a heroic journey to rescue his wife Sita, who had been abducted by Ravana. According to the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana, Rama and his loyal army faced a formidable challenge in reaching Lanka. The sea stretched out before them, a seemingly insurmountable barrier. However, Rama's fortunes changed when he was aided by a group of friendly monkeys led by Hanuman. The monkeys, inspired by their devotion to Rama, worked tirelessly to construct a bridge, or setu, across the sea from India to Lanka. The bridge, known as Rama Setu or Adam's Bridge, was built using large rocks and boulders, and was wide enough for Rama's army to march across. This photograph, taken from Mary Evans Picture Library, captures the essence of Rama's triumphant crossing. The image portrays Rama, resplendent in his regal attire, standing on the shores of Lanka, his army in the background, having successfully crossed the bridge built by the monkeys. The image is a testament to the power of unity, determination, and devotion, as well as the rich historical and mythological heritage of India. The Ramayana is not just a mythological tale, but a deeply rooted cultural tradition that continues to inspire and captivate millions of people around the world. This photograph is a beautiful reminder of the enduring power of this ancient story and the indomitable spirit of Rama and his loyal followers.
