Nestled within the shallow alcoves of Paradise Park in Hayle, Cornwall, this photograph showcases a pair of long-eared owls (Asio otus). The larger owl, with its piercing yellow eyes and distinctive ear tufts, gazes intently out at the world below, while the smaller owl hides behind, its own ear tufts barely visible. The long-eared owl is a medium-sized, nocturnal bird of prey, with a wingspan of around 43 inches. Contrary to their name, their ear tufts are not ears but rather feathers that can be raised when the owl is alarmed.
