A pair of long-eared owls

A pair of long-eared owls, one large, one small, inside a shallow alcove in Paradise Park, a wildlife sanctuary in Hayle, Cornwall. The long-eared owl is medium-sized. Its head feathers are not really ears, but are known as ear tufts, which it raises when alarmed. It is nocturnal and secretive, eats small rodents, and small birds in winter

EDITORS COMMENTS
Nestled within the shallow alcoves of Paradise Park in Hayle, Cornwall, this photograph showcases a pair of long-eared owls (Asio otus). The larger owl, with its piercing yellow eyes and distinctive ear tufts, gazes intently out at the world below, while the smaller owl hides behind, its own ear tufts barely visible. The long-eared owl is a medium-sized, nocturnal bird of prey, with a wingspan of around 43 inches. Contrary to their name, their ear tufts are not ears but rather feathers that can be raised when the owl is alarmed. The owl's head is adorned with intricate markings, including a heart-shaped face and distinctive stripes, which provide excellent camouflage in their woodland habitats. Their beaks are hooked and sharp, perfect for ripping apart their prey, which consists mainly of small rodents and birds in winter. The history of Paradise Park, a wildlife sanctuary, dates back to the 1960s, and it has been dedicated to the conservation of various species, including these beautiful long-eared owls. The owls' claws and talons are perfectly adapted for their predatory lifestyle, allowing them to grasp and kill their prey with ease. As you gaze at this photograph, imagine the tranquility of the park and the mystery of the night as the long-eared owls hunt and call to each other in the stillness of the Cornish countryside.
