The Austrian army, under the command of Archduke Charles, inflicted a severe defeat on the French revolutionary forces led by General Dumouriez. The battle took place in Belgium, and the outcome marked a significant turning point in the war. The French Revolution had begun in 1789, and by 1792, the revolutionary government had declared war on Austria and other European powers. Dumouriez, a French general who had served in the Austrian army before the revolution, was appointed commander of the French forces in the Netherlands. He led a successful campaign against the Austrians, capturing several key cities, including Maastricht and Limburg. However, Dumouriez's successes were short-lived. In early 1793, the Austrians, under the command of Archduke Charles, launched a counteroffensive. The Battle of Neerwinden was a decisive victory for the Austrians, with the French forces suffering heavy losses. Dumouriez was forced to evacuate Belgium and flee to the French border.
