EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts Francesco Sforza (1401-1466), the Italian condottiero and Duke of Milan, and his second wife, Bianca Maria Visconti (1425-1468), Duchess of Milan. The image is based on a painting by Giulio Campi, which can be found in the church of San Sigismondo in Cremona. Francesco Sforza, a renowned military leader, rose to power in the turbulent political landscape of 15th-century Italy. In 1450, he married Bianca Maria Visconti, the daughter of Filippo Maria Visconti, Duke of Milan. Their union solidified the Sforza family's grip on power in Lombardy. Bianca Maria, known for her beauty and intelligence, brought considerable wealth and influence to the marriage. Together, they had several children, including Ludovico Sforza, who would later become Duke of Milan, and Beatrice d'Este, who married Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara. Their children, Massimiliano Sforza, Francois Sforza, and Lodovico il Moro, are also depicted in this illustration. The Sforza family's fashionable attire reflects the opulence and grandeur of the 15th century. This engraving is from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1845. The meticulous detail and vibrant colours of the engraving provide a fascinating glimpse into the fashion and history of the period.
