EDITORS COMMENTS
In this chromolithograph, we encounter two medieval figures, identified as Earl Earl von Orlamunde on the left and Otto VI or Otto VII von Weimar-Orlamunde on the right. Both men, dressed in the regalia of the knightly class, were buried in German monasteries: Kloster Himmelkron and a Cistercian monastery, respectively. Their effigies, preserved in these religious institutions, date back to the late Middle Ages, around 1298 for Earl Conrad III of Bickenbach, who was the probable Earl von Orlamunde, and 1354 for Otto VI or Otto VII von Weimar-Orlamunde. The image, produced by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck and lithographed by C.R., showcases the grandeur and intricacy of chivalric attire during this era. The earls are depicted wearing great helms, adorned with elaborate crests and plumes, and coats of arms, or escutcheons, proudly displayed on their chests. The heraldic symbols on their arms suggest a connection to the Orlamunde and Weimar-Orlamunde families, respectively. This illustration, taken from Hefner-Alteneck's Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century, published in Frankfurt in 1889, offers a fascinating glimpse into the fashion, costume, and art history of the Middle Ages. The meticulous detail and vibrant colors of the chromolithograph bring these historical figures to life, allowing us to appreciate the richness and complexity of the medieval world. Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck (1811-1903) was a renowned German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher. His extensive knowledge and expertise in the fields of art, history, and archaeology are evident in this and detailed representation of these two medieval earls.
