EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 419, featuring the charming Charmouth Wasp-bee (Nomada sheppardana), a species of solitary bee in the family Apidae, subfamily Nomadinae. The wasp-bee is depicted gracefully perched on the leaves of Ribes uva-crispa, commonly known as the Rough Gooseberry or Ribes grossularia. The plate, which dates back to the 1820s-1830s, was produced during the 19th century by the renowned British naturalist, John Obadiah Westwood, who was assisted by the skilled botanical illustrator, John Fleming. The Hymenoptera order, to which the wasp-bee belongs, is characterized by having wings covered with cross-veins, a feature that can be observed in the intricately detailed illustration. The wasp-bee is a vital pollinator, and its presence among the gooseberry plant is a testament to the mutualistic relationship between bees and the plants they visit for nectar and pollen. This exquisite print, which showcases the delicate beauty of both the Charmouth Wasp-bee and the Rough Gooseberry, is an invaluable addition to any natural history collection. The meticulous attention to detail and the high-quality production techniques employed during the 19th century are evident in the vivid colors and lifelike representation of the subjects. This image not only serves as a reminder of the rich biodiversity of the natural world but also as a testament to the important role that natural history illustration played in documenting and preserving our natural heritage for future generations.
