EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 143, featuring Coleoptera, specifically the species Bledius skrimshirii, also known as Bledius furcatus var. skrimshirii or the Skrimshirian Bledius. The intricately detailed beetle is shown in its natural habitat, perched atop the mossy leaves of Funaria hygrometrica, commonly known as Little Golden-locks or Golden Maiden-hair. The plate, published between 1824 and 1839, is a testament to the meticulous work of John Curtis FLS, a renowned British naturalist and entomologist of the 19th century. The Coleoptera order, to which Bledius belongs, is the largest order of insects, characterized by having hard forewings, or elytra, that protect their wings when at rest. The Bledius species, with their long, slender bodies and elongated antennae, are commonly known as rove beetles due to their active, roving behavior. In this image, the Skrimshirian Bledius can be seen exhibiting its distinctive features, including its elongated antennae, which are more than twice the length of its body, and its broad, flat pronotum. The mossy plant, Funaria hygrometrica, provides a striking contrast to the beetle's metallic sheen and serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between insects and their environments. This exquisite plate, a product of the 1820s and 1830s, offers a glimpse into the natural world of the past and showcases the beauty and intricacy of both the Coleoptera and the plant kingdom.
