EDITORS COMMENTS
Marseilles, France - A Glance into the Past: The French Navy's Armored Cruiser, Ernest Renan, at Sea (circa 1910s) This evocative photograph captures the French Navy's armored cruiser, Ernest Renan, sailing majestically at sea during the early 1900s. Built at the turn of the century, this impressive vessel was a key player in the naval battles of World War I. The Ernest Renan was commissioned in 1903 and was one of the most advanced warships of its time. Its armored hull and powerful guns made it a formidable force on the water. During the war, it played a pivotal role in the hunt for the German battleship Goeben, as well as in the Austro-Hungarian Naval blockade, the Battle of Antivari, and the seizure of Corfu in 1916. In this image, the ship's distinctive funnels belch out steam, while its masts tower high above the water. The Ernest Renan was a true steamer, a testament to the era of steam-powered naval warfare. With its sleek lines and powerful presence, it embodies the spirit of the French Navy during a time of great conflict. This photograph, from The Roseries Collection at Mary Evans Picture Library, transports us back to a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the history of Marseilles, France, and the French Navy during World War I.
