EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the enigmatic figure of George Brinton McClellan, an American military leader and two-time presidential candidate. Born on December 3, 1826, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, McClellan rose to prominence during the American Civil War, serving as the General-in-Chief of the Union Army from 1861 to 1862. Despite his impressive military record, McClellan was relieved of his command by President Abraham Lincoln due to his reluctance to launch a full-scale attack against Confederate forces. This decision proved to be a contentious one, as McClellan's supporters believed that he was the best commander the Union had and that Lincoln's interference was unwarranted. Following his removal from the military, McClellan returned to civilian life and served as the Governor of New Jersey from 1878 to 1881. In 1864, he ran for President of the United States against Lincoln, but was ultimately unsuccessful. McClellan's presidential campaign was marked by his opposition to Lincoln's handling of the war and his call for a more conciliatory approach towards the Confederacy. This historic photograph of McClellan, taken during his later years, offers a glimpse into the complex and intriguing life of a man who played a significant role in American history. From his military career to his presidential campaigns, McClellan's legacy continues to be debated and studied by historians and enthusiasts alike. Dating from the late 19th century, this image is a valuable reminder of a pivotal moment in American history and the fascinating characters who shaped it.
