This stunning watercolor painting depicts the exquisite Dendrobium canaliculatum, also known as the Tea-tree Orchid, captured in its full bloom glory. The illustration was created by the renowned botanical artist Fred Polydore Nodder, based on an original outline drawing by Sydney Parkinson during Captain James Cook's first voyage across the Pacific Ocean from 1768 to 1771. During this historic journey, Cook and his crew explored new lands and documented numerous plant species, including the Dendrobium canaliculatum, which was discovered in New Caledonia. The orchid is a member of the Orchidaceae family, specifically the subfamily Asparagales, order Ericales, and the family Dendrobiaceae. It is a monocotyledon, meaning it has one cotyledon in its seed, and is an eudicot, which means it has two embryonic leaves. The Dendrobium canaliculatum is a beautiful epiphyte, which grows on trees and derives its nutrients from the air and rain. Its long, slender stems bear several small, white flowers with a pinkish tinge and a distinctive, narrow, canaliculated labellum. The plant's leaves are long and narrow, and its roots are aerial, which means they grow above the ground.
