EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite drawing of Cyclamen persicum, commonly known as the Persian cyclamen or Persian violet, is a stunning representation of this beautiful and intricate flowering plant. The illustration, drawn by the talented hand of Richard Lancake (Pl 115), was published in "The Chelsea Gardener" by Hazel Le Rougetel in 1990 (plate 9). Cyclamen persicum is a member of the primulaceae family, which is part of the larger group of angiosperms, flowering plants that produce seeds enclosed in an ovary. This particular species is classified as an eudicot, meaning it has two embryonic seed leaves (cotyledons) and belongs to the asterid clade within the larger group of magnoliophytes. The plant is characterized by its distinctive, long, tuberous roots, which store nutrients and water, allowing the plant to survive during the dry summer months. The heart-shaped, waxy leaves emerge from the tuber in the autumn, followed by the beautiful, cup-shaped flowers that bloom in various shades of pink, purple, and white. The Persian cyclamen is native to the Mediterranean region, specifically in Turkey, Iran, and northern Israel. It is a popular ornamental plant, prized for its elegant and delicate appearance. The drawing captures the intricacies of the plant's veining and the subtle details of its petals and sepals, providing a captivating glimpse into the beauty of this fascinating angiosperm.
