EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the grandeur and historical significance of the Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor, located in the heart of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Built in the late 16th century, the cathedral is the oldest continuously operating Catholic church in the Americas and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The intricately designed metalwork facade is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Dominican people. At the center of the photograph, two ornate urns are prominently displayed. These urns once held the remains of Christopher Columbus, the famed explorer who discovered the Americas in 1492. Columbus spent the final years of his life in the Dominican Republic and was initially buried in the cathedral before his remains were later moved to the Faro a Colon (Columbus Lighthouse) in 1898. The Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor is not only a place of worship but also a symbol of the deep connection between the Dominican Republic and its European past. The photograph captures the solemn and reverent atmosphere of the cathedral, inviting us to reflect on the rich history and cultural heritage of this remarkable country.
