This historic print depicts the First Continental Congress, which convened in Philadelphia on September 22, 1774. The Congress was a pivotal moment in American history, as representatives from 12 of the 13 American colonies gathered to discuss their grievances against British rule. The primary issue at hand was the passage of the Stamp Act, which imposed taxes on printed materials in the colonies without their consent. In response, the Congress issued a "Manifesto" or "Address to the Inhabitants of the British Colonies in America," calling on merchants to cease all trade with Great Britain as a means of protest.
