EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts a Roman copy of the renowned Greek sculpture of Alexander the Great, originally sculpted by the ancient Greek artist Lysippos around 330 BC. Alexander III of Macedon, commonly known as Alexander the Great, was a legendary king whose military successes expanded the Macedonian Empire to include much of Europe and Asia. This statue, discovered in Munich's Glyptothek Museum, showcases the young and powerful monarch in his prime. The intricately detailed marble head reveals the regal features of Alexander, with his piercing gaze and flowing, curly hair. The broken nose and subtle imperfections add to the authenticity and age of the piece, transporting us back to the ancient world. The sculpture's type, known as the "Farnese Type," is characterized by a youthful and idealized representation of Alexander, which was popular during the Hellenistic period. The Roman copy, made centuries after the original Greek masterpiece, serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of Alexander the Great and the artistic influence of ancient Greece. The interior of the Glyptothek Museum in Munich, Germany, provides the perfect setting for this magnificent work of art, which continues to captivate visitors and scholars alike with its historical significance and artistic merit.
