EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures a pivotal moment in Russian history as Tsar Alexander II of Russia (1818-1881) makes a visit to Paris, France, in the late 19th century. The tranquil scene in the Bois de Boulogne park belies the imminent danger lurking nearby. At this time, Alexander II was a popular and reformist ruler, but his progressive policies had made him a target for radical groups seeking to overthrow the Russian monarchy. Despite the known threats to his safety, Alexander II chose to travel incognito during his visit to Paris, riding in an open carriage through the picturesque park. However, on this very day, an assassination attempt was made on his life. The photograph, taken just moments before the attempt, shows Alexander II in good spirits, surrounded by his entourage and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. The assassination attempt, which took place on February 13, 1881, was carried out by members of the People's Will, a revolutionary group. They threw bombs at the Tsar's carriage, but he was miraculously unharmed. However, several bystanders were killed or injured in the explosion. Although this attempt on Alexander II's life was unsuccessful, it marked the beginning of the end for the Tsar. He was eventually assassinated in 1881, just over a year later, by members of the same group. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by the Tsar during his reign and the tumultuous political climate of the time.
