EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, taken circa 1911, we find ourselves in the picturesque countryside of Pembrokeshire, Wales, where the oldest person in the country, 104-year-old Mrs Mary Hughes, is seen sitting proudly in the driver's seat of a motor car at Nine Wells near Solva. Born and raised in the Fishguard area, Mrs Hughes spent her entire life immersed in the rural charm of the Welsh countryside, with the exception of her final years. Despite her advanced age, this remarkable woman continued to help manage a small farm, rising with the sun each day to herd the cows and feed the fowls. Her dedication to her land and livestock was unwavering, even as she entered her twilight years. The image of Mrs Hughes in the motor car is a testament to her indomitable spirit and her ability to adapt to new technologies. She sits confidently behind the wheel, her gaze fixed on the road ahead, her expression one of determination and excitement. The car, with its headlights gleaming in the sunlight, appears open and spacious, a fitting companion for this centenarian farmer. As we gaze upon this photograph, we are transported back in time to a simpler era, where the bonds between people and the land were strong, and age was no barrier to living life to the fullest. Mrs Hughes' story is a reminder that no matter how old we may grow, there is always room for adventure and discovery in the beautiful Welsh countryside.
