EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite portrait of Pierre Antoine de Boyer du Suquet, created in 1776 by the talented French artist Charles Nicolas Cochin II. The graphite drawing is beautifully captured on off-white antique laid paper, measuring a diameter of 2 3/4 inches (7 cm). Pierre Antoine de Boyer du Suquet was an accomplished and well-educated individual, being the son of Charles Nicolas Cochin, a renowned engraver and academician of the Académie Royale. Due to his father's influential position, Pierre Antoine enjoyed official favor and quickly advanced in his own artistic pursuits. In 1737, he began working as a draftsman for Menus Plaisirs, where he had the privilege of recording celebrations and major events at court. His talent for creating large-scale and exquisitely detailed prints became widely recognized. This particular portrait captures Pierre Antoine's dignified presence with remarkable precision. The intricate details bring forth his refined features and hint at his aristocratic background. It is evident that Cochin skillfully portrayed not only Pierre Antoine's physical appearance but also conveyed his character through this masterful artwork. The Liszt Collection has preserved this exceptional piece from history, allowing us to appreciate both Cochin's artistic prowess and Pierre Antoine de Boyer du Suquet's significant contribution to art during the late 18th century.
