Portrait of Denis Davydov, c1811, (1939). Russian soldier Yevgraf Davydov (1775-1823) fought in the Napoleonic Wars at the Battle of Austerlitz and the Battle of Ostrovnoye. He lost an arm and a leg at the Battle of Leipzig (1813), and was decorated with military honours. Orest Kiprensky (1782-1836) was born a serf near Saint Petersburg, and while still a boy gained a place to study at the Imperial Academy of Arts in the city. He lived for some years in Italy.
