The Napoleonic Wars were a series of major conflicts fought between France and a number of European powers, including Britain, Austria, Prussia, and Russia. The wars began in 1803 and lasted until 1815. During this time, Napoleon Bonaparte rose to power as the Emperor of France and sought to expand his empire across Europe. His military campaigns led to several major battles such as Austerlitz (1805), Jena-Auerstadt (1806), Wagram (1809), Borodino (1812), Leipzig (1813) and Waterloo (1815). Ultimately, Napoleon was defeated by the combined forces of Britain, Austria, Prussia and Russia at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. This marked the end of his reign as emperor and ushered in a period known as the Congress of Vienna which saw Europe reorganised into new nation states.
