This print showcases "La Taupe & La Taupe Depoiuillee de sa Peau" from the monumental work "Histoire Naturelle, generale et particuliere, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi" by Comte de Buffon. Published between 1749 and 1804, this comprehensive collection of volumes covered various branches of natural sciences prevalent during that time. The image depicts an anatomical study of a mole, both with its fur intact and stripped off its skin. The intricate details captured in this engraving highlight the meticulous observations made by George Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. As one delves into the world of zoology through this artwork, it becomes evident that every aspect was carefully examined to understand the nature and characteristics of animals. Christian Friedrich Fritsch's contribution to this piece is also noteworthy as his expertise in anatomy adds depth to the illustration. The claws of the mole are particularly emphasized in this print, showcasing their importance for digging underground tunnels.
