Discussing the War, in a Coffee-House, at Copenhagen - sketched by E.T. Dolby, 1854. Creator: W Thomas
Discussing the War, in a Coffee-House, at Copenhagen - sketched by E.T. Dolby, 1854. We have been favoured by a Correspondent (Mr. E. T. Dolby) in the Baltic fleet with the accompanying characteristic Sketch...In the centre of the group is seated an old Danish savant, who unfortunately speaks a little English, and invariably bores each new comer with the same question, and jeers at the inability of the English or French to touch the impregnable Cronstadt. No sooner did an English officer, en route for the fleet, present himself at one of the places of general resort at Copenhagen, than the Danish savant mustered his best English, and demanded to know what our Napier will attack first?...the Dane withdrew into a cloud of tobaoco-smoke, only again to emerge to put the everlasting question, and, map in hand, to spare no endeavour to convince his hearers'. Discussing the War, in a Coffee-House, at Copenhagen
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating sketch by English artist E.T. Dolby, created in 1854, published in the "Illustrated London News." The image depicts a lively scene inside a bustling coffee-house in Copenhagen, Denmark, during the Crimean War. At the center of the group sits an elderly Danish scholar, engrossed in a heated discussion with a group of English officers. The old man, who unfortunately speaks only a little English, relentlessly asks each new English arrival the same question: "What will our Napier attack first?" Despite his limited English, the Danish savant's curiosity about the ongoing military strategies of the British forces is insatiable. He pulls out a map and spares no effort to convince his listeners of the impregnability of Cronstadt, a major Russian naval base. The coffee-house, filled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the buzz of conversation, serves as a melting pot for information and gossip. The English officers, weary from their travels and eager for news, listen intently to the Danish scholar's insights, despite his repetitive question. This charming sketch, with its intriguing narrative and vivid details, offers a glimpse into the daily life of a coffee-house during wartime, where the exchange of ideas and information transcends language barriers and fuels the thirst for knowledge and understanding.
