Bringing David Livingstones body down to the coast, Africa, 1873
Bringing David Livingstones body down to the coast, Africa, 1873. Scottish missionary and explorer Livingstone (1813-1873) was the first European to discover the Victoria Falls on the Zambezi river in central Africa. While searching for the source of the Nile in the late 1860s he became seriously ill and went missing. Although he was found, by Henry Morton Stanley in 1871, Livingstone never fully recovered from his illness and died in Bangwelulu, Zambia. His body and his journal were brought back to Britain and he was buried in Westminster Abbey. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a solemn moment in history - the arduous journey of bringing David Livingstone's body down to the coast of Africa. Scottish missionary and explorer, Livingstone, made significant contributions to African exploration during the 19th century. He was renowned for being the first European to discover the majestic Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. However, his quest for finding the source of the Nile led him to fall seriously ill and go missing in late 1860s. It wasn't until 1871 that he was found by Henry Morton Stanley. Sadly, Livingstone never fully recovered from his illness and passed away in Bangwelulu, Zambia. In this poignant image, we witness a group of men carrying Livingstone's lifeless body through a dense forest. The towering trees serve as witnesses to their somber procession. These individuals are not just bearers; they are porters who carry with them an immense responsibility - preserving and honoring their fallen hero. Livingstone's body would eventually be transported back to Britain where he was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey. However, it is worth noting that before his departure from Africa, villagers from Bangwelulu removed his heart and buried it beneath a tree near where he drew his last breath. This photograph serves as a testament not only to Livingstone's remarkable achievements but also highlights the deep reverence held by both Africans and Europeans towards this extraordinary man who dedicated his life to exploration and spreading Christianity across continents.
