EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing detail from the mural found in the Tomb of the Infernal Quadriga. Created by an Etruscan artist during the 4th century BC, this ancient wall painting is now housed in the Museum of Archaeology in Sarteano, Siena, Italy. The image captures a reconstruction of this remarkable tomb that was excavated at the nearby Pianacce Necropolis and dates back to approximately 350-300 BC. Known as Tomba della Quadriga Infernale, it offers a glimpse into Etruscan beliefs and customs surrounding death and the afterlife. In this particular detail, we are treated to a visual feast of mythical creatures and symbols. A chariot drawn by four horses known as quadriga takes center stage, while griffins soar above amidst swirling waves reminiscent of Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. Dolphins gracefully swim alongside intricate key patterns adorning the border. The scene exudes an otherworldly aura with demonic figures lurking within its depths. It hints at a journey through Hades' realm with its depiction of underworld motifs such as lions and demons. The charioteer stands resolute against this eerie backdrop, guiding us through this painted portal into another realm. Nicolo Orsi Battaglini skillfully captured every nuance of this masterpiece in his photograph, allowing us to appreciate its beauty even outside museum walls. This print serves as a testament to both ancient artistry
