From a collection of papers of William Dermody (1895-1933) who served with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the First World War. He was gassed in the 1916 Battle of the Somme and was treated at the Royal Hospital in Sheffield. This poignant print captures a heartbreaking scene from the First World War, depicting wounded soldiers and dedicated staff in a hospital ward. Believed to be taken at The Sheffield Royal Hospital in 1916, this image is part of an invaluable collection of papers belonging to William Dermody. Serving with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the war, Dermody himself experienced the horrors of battle and was gassed during the infamous Battle of the Somme. After sustaining injuries, Dermody found solace and treatment at The Sheffield Royal Hospital. This photograph serves as a testament to both his personal journey and that of countless other brave soldiers who fought for their countries' freedom. Tragically, fate dealt another cruel blow to Dermody's life when he was fatally struck by a corporation bus in Birmingham in February 1933 at just 38 years old. His untimely death marked an end to a life shaped by sacrifice and resilience.
