EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures a heartbreaking scene from the First World War, depicting wounded soldiers and dedicated staff in a hospital ward. Believed to be taken at The Sheffield Royal Hospital in 1916, this image is part of an invaluable collection of papers belonging to William Dermody. Serving with the Royal Warwickshire Regiment during the war, Dermody himself experienced the horrors of battle and was gassed during the infamous Battle of the Somme. After sustaining injuries, Dermody found solace and treatment at The Sheffield Royal Hospital. This photograph serves as a testament to both his personal journey and that of countless other brave soldiers who fought for their countries' freedom. Tragically, fate dealt another cruel blow to Dermody's life when he was fatally struck by a corporation bus in Birmingham in February 1933 at just 38 years old. His untimely death marked an end to a life shaped by sacrifice and resilience. Preserved within Sheffield City Archives (X643), this print offers us a glimpse into history's most devastating conflict while honoring those who served on its frontlines. It stands as a reminder of the tremendous sacrifices made by individuals like William Dermody and pays tribute to all those affected by war.
