Smell pathway

Smell pathway. Artwork of the pathway involved in the sensation of smelling a flower. The perception of smell starts in the lining (mucosa) of the nose (1), where tiny hair-like receptor nerve cells (2) detect airborne chemicals. Activated receptor cells transmit messages (3) to the olfactory bulb (4), just above the nasal cavity. The olfactory bulb is a swelling on the end of the olfactory nerve which carries the sensory impulses to the brains smell centres (5). These olfactory centres lie brains frontal lobes (centre left) and limbic system (6), which interpret the impulses to produce the sensation of smell

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Smell Pathway" takes us on a visual journey through the intricate process of smelling a flower. The artwork beautifully illustrates the pathway involved in this sensory experience, starting from the lining of our nose. In this detailed illustration, we can see how tiny hair-like receptor nerve cells play a crucial role in detecting airborne chemicals (2). Once these receptors are activated, they transmit messages to the olfactory bulb (4), located just above the nasal cavity. This bulb acts as a relay station, carrying sensory impulses to our brain's smell centers (5). The artist skillfully portrays how these olfactory centers reside within our frontal lobes and limbic system (6), which interpret these impulses and ultimately generate the sensation of smell. It is fascinating to witness how such an intricate network within our bodies works harmoniously to allow us to appreciate the delightful fragrance of flowers like tulips. Through this art piece, we gain a deeper appreciation for the complexity of our sense of smell and its connection with various parts of our anatomy. Science Photo Library has once again captured both scientific accuracy and artistic beauty in their portrayal of this essential aspect of human perception.
