Quantum waves

Quantum waves. Computer model showing a quantum wavefunction bouncing from a rough surface. The wavefunction was dropped from top, and it has bounced once against the rough surface seen across bottom. The compressed pattern seen at bottom is faster velocities (or shorter wavelengths). The wavelengths at top are more spaced out, indicating that this part of the wavefunction has slowed and is about to fall back down again. The yellow and blue colours correspond to peaks in the quantum wavefunction. Such studies may have applications in atomic-scale electronics. This model was produced as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Quantum Waves" offers a mesmerizing glimpse into the intricate world of quantum mechanics. Created as an artwork by Professor Eric Heller, this computer model showcases a quantum wavefunction in action, bouncing off a rough surface. The image reveals a compressed pattern at the bottom, characterized by faster velocities and shorter wavelengths, while the top displays more spaced out wavelengths indicating deceleration before falling back down again. The vibrant yellow and blue colors represent peaks within the quantum wavefunction. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, this simulation holds great potential for applications in atomic-scale electronics. By studying these colliding waves on a microscopic level, researchers can gain valuable insights into particle physics and develop new theories to advance our understanding of fundamental principles governing matter. Professor Eric Heller's artistic approach beautifully merges scientific research with visual representation. Through his skillful modeling techniques, he has transformed complex theoretical concepts into an abstract masterpiece that both educates and inspires viewers. This thought-provoking piece serves as a testament to the interdisciplinary nature of art and science, illustrating how they can intertwine to create something truly extraordinary. Science Photo Library proudly presents this remarkable creation as part of their collection dedicated to showcasing cutting-edge scientific discoveries through captivating visuals.
