US Naval Observatory

US Naval Observatory, Washington DC, USA. The USNO was established in 1830 to provide astronomical timings and data for US shipping. These buildings were erected in 1893 on Observatory Hill to a design by Richard Morris Hunt. They replaced the Old Naval Observatory (in Foggy Bottom, near the river). The main features here are a transit house (Building 8, left) and the Main Building (centre and right). The latter includes Building 1 and the James Melville Gilliss library (conical roof, far right). Building 1 houses administration offices and a tower (centre left) with a dome for the 12-inch Clark/Saegmueller refracting telescope

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic US Naval Observatory, situated on Observatory Hill in Washington DC. Built in 1893 to replace its predecessor near the river, this architectural marvel was designed by Richard Morris Hunt. The focal points of this grand establishment are the transit house on the left (Building 8) and the Main Building at the center and right. Within the Main Building lies Building 1, which houses administration offices as well as a tower with a dome housing an impressive 12-inch Clark/Saegmueller refracting telescope. The James Melville Gilliss library, distinguished by its conical roof on the far right, adds an air of intellectualism to this magnificent structure. Established in 1830 with a primary purpose of providing astronomical timings and data for US shipping, the USNO has played a crucial role in advancing our understanding of astrophysics throughout history. As we gaze upon this monochrome image capturing both elegance and scientific significance, we are transported back to a time when these buildings stood tall amidst their surroundings. This photograph serves as a reminder of America's rich naval history intertwined with groundbreaking astronomical research conducted within these very walls.
