Magellan burning up in Venus atmosphere, artwork

Magellan spacecrafts last experiment. Artists impression of the Magellan radar-mapping spacecraft burning up in the atmosphere of Venus. On 10 October 1994 NASA scientists will let Magellan descend from its current orbit to a point where it starts to feel the drag of the upper atmosphere of the planet. Differential drag on the solar panels will cause the spacecraft to roll, a tendency which will be resisted by the attitude control motors. This experiment, known as Windmill, will give valuable data on the properties of the upper atmosphere. Once the fuel for the motors runs out, Magellan will fall deeper into the atmosphere and burn up four days later

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork captures the final moments of the Magellan spacecraft as it plunges into the fiery depths of Venus' atmosphere. Aptly named "Magellan burning up" this print showcases the dramatic end to a groundbreaking scientific mission. On 10 October 1994, NASA scientists orchestrated an experiment known as Windmill, allowing Magellan to descend from its orbit and experience the drag of Venus' upper atmosphere. As depicted in this artist's impression, differential drag on Magellan's solar panels causes it to roll uncontrollably. However, the spacecraft's attitude control motors valiantly resist this motion, providing valuable data on atmospheric properties during its descent. The image evokes a sense of awe and wonderment at humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge through space exploration. Over four days after running out of fuel for its motors, Magellan succumbs to Venus' gravitational pull and meets its ultimate fate: disintegration amidst intense heat and pressure. This poignant moment symbolizes both triumph and sacrifice in our quest for understanding distant worlds. The Science Photo Library presents this print as a testament to human ingenuity and curiosity about our universe beyond Earth's boundaries. It serves as a reminder that even in destruction lies invaluable knowledge waiting to be discovered by future generations of explorers.
