Giovanni Schiaparelli lunar advert

Giovanni Schiaparelli lunar advert. Dating from around 1889, this advert (for Liebigs Meat Extract) shows the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910) with an early artwork of the Earth as seen from the surface of the Moon. From 1862, Schiaparelli was Director of the Milan Observatory for forty years. In 1866 he showed that meteors follow cometary orbits. In 1877 Mars made one of its closest approaches to Earth enabling him to observe many dark lines criss-crossing the planet. He called these lines canali (channels), which was mistranslated as canals. He also made observations of Mercury, as well as other objects in the solar system

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a historical lunar advert featuring the renowned Italian astronomer, Giovanni Schiaparelli. Dating back to 1889, this advertisement promotes Liebigs Meat Extract while also highlighting Schiaparelli's significant contributions to the field of astronomy. Giovanni Schiaparelli, who served as the Director of the Milan Observatory for an impressive forty years, made groundbreaking discoveries during his career. In 1866, he demonstrated that meteors follow cometary orbits and in 1877, during Mars' close approach to Earth, he observed intricate dark lines on its surface which he called "canali" (channels). Unfortunately, this term was mistranslated as "canals" sparking fascination and speculation about possible Martian civilizations. The artwork featured in this advert depicts an early representation of Earth as seen from the Moon's rocky surface. It beautifully captures both the scientific curiosity and artistic imagination prevalent during the late 19th century. Schiaparelli's observations extended beyond Mars; he also studied Mercury and various other celestial objects within our solar system. His dedication to advancing planetary science is evident in his work. This print not only serves as a testament to Schiaparelli's legacy but also provides insight into marketing strategies employed during that era. The inclusion of a prominent scientist like Schiaparelli endorsing Liebigs Meat Extract aimed to instill trust and credibility among consumers. Overall, this image offers a glimpse into history by combining elements of artistry, scientific exploration, and advertising ingenuity all within one captivating frame.
