Eucalyptus stem, light micrograph

Eucalyptus stem. Light micrograph of a transverse section through a one-year-old stem of a Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) plant. The epidermis (outer layer) has a thick cuticle made up of the waterproof substance caoutchouc (latex rubber), because of this there is no periderm (cork) layer. Under the epidermis is the cortex with cavities (white circles) which produce the eucalyptus oil. The vascular cylinder (centre) can be seen consisting of (from outside inwards) a ring of phloem sieve tubes (pink and blue), a ring of cambium (red), and xylem tissue (yellow-orange). Magnification: x14 when printed 10 centimetres wide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a Eucalyptus stem, captured under a light microscope. The transverse section reveals the various layers and structures that make up this remarkable plant. Starting with the outermost layer, we see the epidermis, which is protected by a thick cuticle made of caoutchouc, a waterproof substance similar to latex rubber. Interestingly, due to this protective coating, there is no periderm or cork layer present in this particular stem. Moving inward, we encounter the cortex region which contains cavities responsible for producing eucalyptus oil. These white circular formations add an ethereal touch to the image. At the center of attention lies the vascular cylinder consisting of three distinct components: phloem sieve tubes forming a ring around it (in shades of pink and blue), followed by cambium (depicted in red), and finally xylem tissue (colored yellow-orange). This vital structure plays a crucial role in transporting nutrients throughout the plant. The magnification level used for printing was x14 when scaled to 10 centimeters wide. Against a clean white background, this visually stunning micrograph provides us with insight into both botany and biology as we explore cellular structures within plants. This extraordinary photograph from Science Photo Library serves as an excellent educational resource for those interested in studying plant anatomy and appreciating nature's intricate design at its finest.
