Eroded sea arch

Sea arch and a calm sea. This is Durdle Door, near Lulworth Cove in Dorset, UK. A sea arch forms when wave action erodes part of a headland quicker than the rest. Initially, caves form on each side of the headland, cutting deeper until they merge to form an arch. The arch will continue to be eroded by waves, eventually collapsing. In this case the arch has remained while surrounding soft chalk rocks have been eroded away. The name Durdle Door, and the structure itself, is thought to be at least 1000 years old

EDITORS COMMENTS
This breathtaking print captures the mesmerizing beauty of an eroded sea arch, set against a serene and calm sea. Located in Durdle Door, near Lulworth Cove in Dorset, UK, this natural wonder showcases the fascinating process of wave erosion on a headland. Over time, powerful waves have sculpted caves on each side of the headland, gradually merging to form this magnificent arch. While most structures succumb to the relentless power of nature's forces, this sea arch has defied centuries of erosion. Surrounding soft chalk rocks have been worn away by the elements, leaving behind only this resilient formation. Believed to be at least 1000 years old, both the name Durdle Door and its structure hold a rich history that adds to their allure. The panoramic view offered by this photograph allows us to appreciate not only the grandeur of nature but also its delicate balance. The coastal geography and geological features are beautifully showcased in this image - from the rugged promontory jutting into the water to the weathered rocks shaped by countless storms. As we gaze upon this scene captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of our planet's ever-changing landscape and how it continues to inspire awe and admiration for those fortunate enough to witness such natural wonders firsthand.
