Early human warfare

Early human warfare. Coloured artwork of early humans fighting each other in the Stone Age using wooden clubs and bows and arrows. This battle is taking place in and around a fortified position. This artwork is based on studies of fortified Stone Age camps, such as the one found at Furfooz, in Belgium. A defendable position was surrounded by a wall of stones piled on top of each other. During the battle, the stones would be pushed (upper right) onto the enemy below. Furfooz, like other Stone Age fortified camps, was later used by the Romans. Original artwork published in Primitive Man (Louis Figuier, 1870)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork transports us back in time to the Stone Age, offering a vivid depiction of early human warfare. The scene unfolds with intense energy as two groups of early humans engage in a fierce battle using primitive weapons such as wooden clubs and bows and arrows. The conflict takes place within and around a fortified position, revealing the strategic thinking employed by our ancestors. Based on studies of real Stone Age camps like Furfooz in Belgium, this illustration showcases one defensive tactic utilized during these ancient conflicts. A wall made of piled stones surrounds the defendable position, serving both as protection and an offensive tool. In the upper right corner, we witness stones being pushed onto the enemy below, highlighting the resourcefulness and ingenuity displayed by early humans. The artist's use of color breathes life into this historical moment from 1870 when Louis Figuier first published his work "Primitive Man". Every detail is meticulously crafted to transport us into this prehistoric battlefield where injuries are sustained, lives are lost, and survival hangs in the balance. As we gaze upon this print from Science Photo Library, we cannot help but marvel at how far humanity has come since those primal days. It serves as a powerful reminder of our shared history and the resilience that allowed us to evolve into what we are today.
