Colour SEM of cross-section through stomach wall

Stomach mucosa. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of a cross section through the mucous membrane (or mucosa) lining the inside of the human stomach. The mucosa is the thick yellow layer. This consists of gastric glands that extend through the mucosa to open at the top as gastric pits. These glands produce acid and digestive enzymes which are used to break down food. Epithelial cells (brown, at top) produce a thick layer of mucus which lubricates and protects the stomach lining. Large blood vessels (at lower centre) are seen immediately above the muscular layer that makes up the stomach wall. Magnification: x40 at 5x7cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing view of the intricate cross-section through the stomach wall. The vibrant colors and detailed structure captured by this Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) offer a unique insight into the inner workings of our digestive system. At first glance, we are drawn to the thick yellow layer known as the mucosa, which lines the inside of the human stomach. This vital component consists of gastric glands that extend throughout its entirety, opening at the top as gastric pits. These specialized glands play a crucial role in producing acid and digestive enzymes responsible for breaking down food. The brown epithelial cells located at the top contribute to maintaining a healthy stomach lining by generating a protective layer of mucus. This mucus not only lubricates but also shields against potential damage caused by acidic substances within our stomachs. As we explore further, large blood vessels come into focus just above the muscular layer forming the stomach wall. These blood vessels ensure efficient nutrient absorption and waste removal from this essential organ. With an impressive magnification level of x40 at 5x7cm size, this print invites us to marvel at nature's incredible design while deepening our understanding of digestion and gut health. A true masterpiece brought to you by Science Photo Library!
