Cassini-Huygens probe at Titan, artwork

Cassini-Huygens probe at Titan. Artwork of the joint NASA-ESA Cassini-Huygens spacecraft firing its engine on one of its encounters with Titan in 2004. This followed a journey of seven years after the launch from Earth in 1997. Attached to the Cassini orbiter is the Huygens probe (yellow, dish-shaped). The main antenna dish (grey), used to transmit pictures and data back to Earth, is at left. Huygens separated from Cassini on 25 December 2004, and descended to the surface of Saturns largest moon, Titan, in early 2005. As of 2012, Cassini is still orbiting Saturn and its mission has been extended to 2017

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork showcases the Cassini-Huygens probe during its historic encounter with Titan, Saturn's largest moon. The joint NASA-ESA spacecraft is depicted firing its engine as it approaches the enigmatic celestial body in 2004. This momentous event marked the culmination of a remarkable seven-year journey that began with the probe's launch from Earth in 1997. The image highlights the Huygens probe, characterized by its distinctive yellow dish shape, attached to the Cassini orbiter. Positioned at left is the main antenna dish, crucial for transmitting valuable data and breathtaking images back to Earth. Notably, on December 25th, 2004, Huygens separated from Cassini and embarked on a daring descent towards Titan's surface. As we delve into this mesmerizing illustration, it becomes evident that this mission represents an extraordinary feat of technological prowess and scientific exploration. With Cassini still orbiting Saturn as of 2012 (and beyond), its extended mission until 2017 has allowed researchers to unravel countless mysteries surrounding our solar system's ringed giant. This awe-inspiring depiction serves as a testament to humanity's relentless pursuit of knowledge and understanding about our place in space. It symbolizes our unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and venturing into uncharted territories for groundbreaking discoveries that expand our horizons in planetary science.
