Caroline Herschel. Portrait of Caroline Lucretia Herschel (1750-1848), German-British astronomer. Caroline was the sister of William Herschel, and moved from Germany to join him in Britain in 1772. In 1782 they gave up their musical careers to study astronomy. Starting as Williams assistant, Caroline helped him to make telescope mirrors, make observations, and prepare his catalogues and reports. In 1783 she discovered three new nebulae. During 1786-97 she discovered eight new comets. She also revised Flamsteeds star catalogue to make it easier to use. Her fame led her to become the first professional female astronomer. On Williams death in 1822, Caroline returned to Germany
