Bonobo ape conservation

MODEL RELEASED. Bonobo ape conservation. Conservation worker carrying a young bonobo ape (Pan paniscus) on her shoulders. This species of chimpanzee was discovered in 1929. It lives in a matriarchal and egalitarian society where sexual activity between members plays a major role in greeting, conflict resolution and post-conflict resolution, regardless of age and sex. In the wild it is found only in a small area of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and is considered to be the most endangered of the great apes. It is threatened by habitat loss, the bush meat trade and the trade in live primates. Photographed at the Lola ya Bonobo (Bonobo Paradise) Sanctuary, Democratic Republic of Congo

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible efforts of bonobo ape conservation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In this heartwarming image, a dedicated conservation worker carries a young bonobo ape on her shoulders, symbolizing the tireless commitment to protecting these endangered creatures. The bonobo ape, also known as Pan paniscus or pygmy chimpanzee, was discovered in 1929 and is found only in a small area of the DRC. Living in a matriarchal and egalitarian society, these apes engage in sexual activity for various purposes such as greeting, conflict resolution, and post-conflict resolution regardless of age or sex. Considered to be one of the most endangered great apes due to habitat loss and illegal trades like bush meat and live primates, their survival relies heavily on sanctuaries like Lola ya Bonobo (Bonobo Paradise) Sanctuary. This sanctuary serves as a safe haven for these magnificent creatures where they can thrive under expert care. Through this powerful photograph captured by Science Photo Library at Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary, we witness not only the vulnerability but also the resilience of these beautiful animals. It reminds us that every effort counts when it comes to preserving our planet's biodiversity. Let this image serve as an inspiration for all individuals passionate about wildlife conservation. Together, we can make a difference by supporting initiatives that protect endangered species like the bonobo ape while raising awareness about their critical role within our ecosystem.
