John Wesley, the founder of the non-conformist Methodist movement in the Church of England. He is thought to have visited Cornwall 33 times, between 1743 and his death in 1791. Wesleys practice of preaching outdoors, in barns and cottages was well suited to Cornwalls rural geography where many villages were isolated from the parish church. The bust, crafted in Staffordshire, England, portrays Wesley wearing a dignified black cassock and a pristine white clerical collar. Resting on a square base adorned with delicate leaf patterns, this remarkable piece stands at 24.5 cm high. John Wesley's profound impact on Cornwall is evident through his numerous visits to the region between 1743 and his passing in 1791 - an impressive total of 33 times.
