EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from 1950, we are transported back in time to witness a moment of respite for four crew members of an engineers train. Nestled near Glenfinnan on the picturesque West Highland extension line between Fort William and Mallaig, these hardworking individuals take a well-deserved break on a sunny August day. The focal point of the image is undoubtedly the majestic locomotive standing tall in the background. A class K2 2-6-0 No 61786, built by the esteemed London and North Eastern Railway specifically for conquering the challenging gradients of the West Highland lines. Its powerful presence serves as a testament to engineering prowess during that era. Meanwhile, our attention is also drawn to a steam crane diligently unloading concrete drainage pipes nearby. This vital task showcases not only the ingenuity but also highlights how every cog in this well-oiled machine plays its part in maintaining railway infrastructure. Adding an element of personal touch, we notice Reverend Arthur Cawston's bicycle parked alongside them. As it turns out, he was not just an observer but also an avid photographer who embarked on cycling holidays while capturing moments like these. This snapshot encapsulates both camaraderie among workers and their dedication towards keeping United Kingdom's railways running smoothly amidst breathtaking highland landscapes. It reminds us that even during breaks, their commitment never wavered – ensuring safe journeys for all passengers traversing this iconic route through history.
