Pulling power... youngsters from the Kirklees Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme pull their weight in a sponsored barge tow on Saturday. Helping them in their efforts to raise £ 1, 000 are chairman E Austen Johnson (left) and organiser Kevin Jenkins (right). Teams of six and seven pulled the barge from Brighouse Basin to Sowerby Bridge. They are pictured getting underway after a brief stop outside the Barge and Barrel pub, Elland marina. Money raised will go towards offsetting £ 4, 000 spent recently on fitting a new gearbox to the barge - named after the chairman - which is specially adapted to take wheelchairs. 1st July 1990

EDITORS COMMENTS
Pulling power. . . Youngsters from the Kirklees Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme showcase their determination and community spirit as they pull their weight in a sponsored barge tow. On a sunny Saturday, teams of six and seven eagerly embark on a mission to raise £1,000 for a noble cause. Chairman E Austen Johnson and organiser Kevin Jenkins stand proudly beside them, offering guidance and support. The picturesque scene captures the moment when the young participants set off after a brief stop outside the Barge and Barrel pub at Elland marina. The barge, aptly named after the chairman himself, has been specially adapted to accommodate wheelchairs, symbolizing inclusivity within their charitable efforts. Every ounce of strength exerted by these children contributes towards offsetting the recent expenditure of £4,000 on fitting a new gearbox for this remarkable vessel. Their selfless actions demonstrate that even in our fast-paced world, where childhood often takes backstage to technology and convenience, there are still those who prioritize giving back to their community. This heartwarming image transports us back to July 1990 - an era filled with innocence and simplicity. It reminds us that charity knows no bounds or age limits; it is an enduring value passed down through generations. These youngsters embody hope for brighter futures as they navigate through canals of Huddersfield's West Yorkshire region.
