Abuse of the privilege extended to young anglers to fish at Swanswell Pool in Coventry
Abuse of the privilege extended to young anglers to fish at Swanswell Pool in Coventry city centre has led to trouble the first week of the new season and it could result in the " no fishing" signs going up again. News of good catches being made at Swanswell has brought anglers out in force. The snag they are not all youngsters. Coventry and District a general secretary Harry Twyneham said: " I went down with our president Jack Beale on Wednesday night and there must have been 180 people fishing. Many of them were youths and men and the youngsters for whom the water was intended were getting elbowed out. They didn t stand a chance.
" We had to turf several people off. Some were quite abusive but fortunately we had police support. I must stress that fishing at Swanswell is only for young anglers up to 12 years old that was the agreement made by the C.D.A.A. with the Parks Department when arrangements were made to open up the water this season." Mr. Twyneham said he feared that the fishing at Swanswell it has produced good roach, tench and carp in the opening Week would be lost if adults continued to cash in on the facility. He appealed to other anglers to keep away and give the juveniles a chance.
Our photograph shows the anglers hoping for a bite after the long-standing ban on fishing the pool was relaxed this season.

EDITORS COMMENTS
Abuse of Privilege Threatens Young Anglers' Fishing Haven in Coventry City Centre". The picturesque Swanswell Pool in Coventry city centre has long been a sanctuary for young anglers, offering them the opportunity to cast their lines and reel in some prized catches. However, trouble has marred the first week of the new fishing season, jeopardizing this cherished privilege. News spread like wildfire about the bountiful catches being made at Swanswell, attracting an influx of eager anglers. Unfortunately, not all were youngsters as intended. Harry Twyneham, general secretary of Coventry and District Angling Association (C. D. A. A. ), expressed his dismay when he witnessed 180 people fishing on a single evening visit with C. D. A. A. 's president Jack Beale. Twyneham recounted how youths were being elbowed out by older individuals who had no right to be there. Several confrontations ensued, but thankfully police support was available to maintain order. The agreement between C. D. A. A. and the Parks Department clearly stipulated that only young anglers up to 12 years old should fish at Swanswell. Fearing that this abuse would lead to "no fishing" signs resurfacing around the pool once again, Twyneham appealed passionately for adult anglers to respect the sanctity of this haven and give juveniles a fair chance at enjoying their beloved pastime. As captured in our evocative photograph by Tom Moore from June 21st, 1971, hopeful anglers gather along Swanswell's tranquil shores eagerly awaiting a bite after years of longing for its reopening following a longstanding ban on fishing activities. Let us hope that harmony can be restored so that future generations may continue cherishing this idyllic spot.
