A record shop opened today with the help of cash from West Midlands County Council

A record shop opened today with the help of cash from West Midlands County Council. Alpha Records is the brain-child of two young West Indians who saw that there was an untapped market for West Indian music in Coventry. The shop, on Foleshill Road, has been set up as a co-operative - and the county council has given the enterprise a grant of £ 5, 000 from money set aside to support co-ops. Alpha Records has also received a loan of £ 4, 000 from Industrial Common Ownership Finance, an independent body which helps co-poeratives. It will also draw £ 40 per week per worker from the governments Enterpprise Allowance Scheme, set up to help new businesses get off the ground. Tony McCook (24) right of photo, of Hillmorton Road and Philmore Duke (23) of Brook Close, Hillfields, who run a travelling black music disco, came up with the idea for the shop more than nine months ago. They took theeir scheme to the Coventry Co-operative Development Agency and with its help drew up a business plan and conducted a market research survey. Their research showed that youngsters from Coventry, Leamington and Rugby were travelling to London and Birmingham to get hold of West Indian music.

EDITORS COMMENTS
A New Groove in Coventry: Alpha Records Opens with Support from West Midlands County Council In this photo print, we witness the birth of a cultural hub as Alpha Records, a record shop specializing in West Indian music, opens its doors on Foleshill Road. Thanks to the visionary minds of Tony McCook and Philmore Duke, two young West Indians who recognized an untapped market in Coventry, this co-operative venture has become a reality. The support from West Midlands County Council has been instrumental in bringing this dream to life. With a generous grant of £5,000 specifically allocated for supporting co-ops, the council has shown its commitment to fostering local entrepreneurship. Additionally, Industrial Common Ownership Finance provided a loan of £4,000 to further empower this cooperative endeavor. To ensure their success and growth during these early stages, Alpha Records will also benefit from the government's Enterprise Allowance Scheme. Each worker will receive £40 per week through this scheme designed to assist new businesses like theirs. Tony McCook and Philmore Duke's journey began over nine months ago when they approached the Coventry Co-operative Development Agency with their innovative idea. Through meticulous planning and comprehensive market research surveys conducted with assistance from the agency, they discovered that young enthusiasts across Coventry were traveling all the way to London or Birmingham for access to authentic West Indian music. With Alpha Records now open for business right here in Coventry thanks to unwavering determination and invaluable support from various entities including West Midlands County Council - it is clear that our city's vibrant cultural landscape just got even richer.
