EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the main drive leading to Wednesfield Cottage Homes in Staffordshire, established in 1890 by the Wolverhampton Union to provide housing for pauper children, separated from the workhouse system. The Union sought to create a more humane and nurturing environment for these children, who were often orphaned, abandoned, or impoverished. Located on Amos Lane, the Homes consisted of eight individual cottages, each accommodating 30 boys or girls. The site also featured essential facilities, such as an infirmary, schools, swimming pool, and workshops. The infirmary ensured that children received medical care when needed, while the schools provided them with a basic education. The swimming pool, a rare luxury in the 1890s, offered the children an opportunity to enjoy recreational activities and promote their physical wellbeing. The workshops allowed the older children to learn various trades and skills, preparing them for employment upon leaving the Homes. This photograph, taken in 1913, offers a glimpse into the past, revealing the historical significance of the Wednesfield Cottage Homes as a crucial part of the social welfare system during the Victorian era. The image transports us back in time, allowing us to appreciate the efforts made to improve the lives of children living in poverty and hardship. The architecture of the cottages, with their red-tiled roofs and whitewashed walls, adds to the charm and character of this once-thriving community.
