This engraving captures a pivotal moment during Sir Allen Young's Pandora Arctic Expedition of 1875-1877. In this image, the intrepid crew of the Pandora can be seen using the ship's boats to hunt walruses in the frigid Arctic waters off the northern coast of Canada and Alaska. The expedition, which was funded by Young in his quest to discover the Northwest Passage and any traces of the lost Franklin Expedition of 1845, is depicted here in the midst of a successful hunt. Sir Allen Young had made two attempts to navigate the Northwest Passage between 1875 and 1877, but it was during the second attempt that the crew encountered a large herd of walruses.
