EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Union Workhouse in Axbridge, Somerset, as it stood in the early 20th century. Designed by architect Samuel Welch and erected in 1837, this imposing building once served as a place of last resort for the destitute and the poor. The workhouse, located on West Street, later became St. John's Hospital in the early 20th century. The Victorian and Edwardian eras, during which this workhouse was in operation, were marked by widespread poverty and a harsh social welfare system. The workhouse symbolized the harsh realities of life for those who could not support themselves, offering only the bare necessities of life in exchange for hard labor. Despite its somber history, the workhouse is a striking example of architectural design from the 1830s. The building's grand facade, with its tall, arched windows and intricate stonework, stands in stark contrast to the grassy lawn and medical facilities that were added to the complex in later years. The flag atop the building adds a sense of authority and order to the scene. The garden and lawn, dotted with trees and surrounded by other buildings, offer a glimpse into the complex's transformation into a hospital, providing care and health services to the community. The image invites us to reflect on the past and the historical significance of this once-symbol of poverty and hardship, now a symbol of medical care and health in the town of Axbridge.
