EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph from 1912, a large crowd of people, mostly women, are seen queuing outside Bow Street Magistrates Court, surrounded by police officers. The scene unfolds against the backdrop of a widespread window-breaking campaign carried out by the Suffragettes, a militant organization fighting for women's right to vote. The caption on the reverse of the print reads, "Window Smashing Continued. The Suffragettes' attempt to Surprise the World last night was not altogether a success, although a great deal of damage was done and many arrests were made." The Suffragettes, who believed in using radical tactics to draw attention to their cause, had planned a series of surprise window-smashing raids across London the previous night. However, the police had taken precautions to prevent such incidents, resulting in only partial success for the activists. Despite the setbacks, the campaign had generated significant publicity and outrage, as evidenced by the onlookers gathered outside the courthouse, eager to witness the unfolding events. The photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of the women's suffrage movement, as these brave women continued to challenge societal norms and fight for their fundamental rights.
